Source Review: 260 Sources Across 38 Countries
Introduction
NewsDataHub aggregates news from 260 RSS sources across 38 countries, covering 16 languages and 7 regions. This week, we expanded significantly by adding four new specialist verticals: sports, culture, science, and entertainment. Here’s how our source landscape looks now.
Source Stats at a Glance
| Metric | Count |
|---|---|
| Total sources | 260 |
| Countries | 38 |
| Regions | 7 |
| Languages | 16 |
| Source categories | 9 |
Our sources delivered 4,841 topics from 27,505 articles in the current dataset, demonstrating the breadth of global news coverage.
Coverage by Region
Europe dominates our source list with 116 sources (44.6%), reflecting the continent’s dense media landscape. Asia follows with 51 sources, while North America contributes 43.
| Region | Sources | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | 116 | 44.6% |
| Asia | 51 | 19.6% |
| North America | 43 | 16.5% |
| Africa | 18 | 6.9% |
| South America | 16 | 6.2% |
| Middle East | 15 | 5.8% |
The top countries by source count are the United States (32), Germany (23), and the United Kingdom (17). However, topic output tells a different story: Germany leads with 1,230 topics, followed by the US (826) and the UK (737).
Language Diversity
English-language sources make up 45% of our total (117 sources), which is expected given the global reach of English-language media. German follows with 31 sources, then Spanish (20), Italian (12), and French (11).
We also cover Arabic (8), Japanese (8), Korean (7), Dutch (7), Norwegian (6), Swedish (6), Danish (5), Polish (5), Chinese (4), and Ukrainian (4) — ensuring regional stories are captured in their original language before translation.
Category Mix
This week’s expansion added four specialist verticals alongside our traditional news categories:
| Category | Sources | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Newspaper | 89 | Traditional print and digital newspapers |
| Public media | 38 | State broadcasters (BBC, NHK, ARD, etc.) |
| Sports | 28 | Dedicated sports outlets (ESPN, Kicker, Marca) |
| Culture | 25 | Arts and culture sections (Guardian Culture, AlloCiné) |
| Science | 23 | Science journals and sections (Nature, Spektrum) |
| News agency | 19 | Wire services (Reuters, AP, DPA) |
| Entertainment | 17 | Film, TV, music (Variety, Billboard, Soompi) |
| Tech | 17 | Technology outlets (Heise, Ars Technica) |
| Government | 3 | Official government feeds (CISA, NCSC) |
The traditional categories (newspaper, public media, news agency) still form the backbone at 56% of all sources. The new specialist verticals add depth: sports coverage from 26 countries, culture from 21, science from 16, and entertainment from 14.
New This Week: Specialist Verticals
The most significant change this week was adding 93 specialist sources across four verticals:
-
Sports (28 sources): From ESPN in the US to Kicker in Germany, Marca in Spain, and Soompi in South Korea for K-pop and K-drama coverage. We also added Switzerland as our 38th country with Blick Sport.
-
Culture (25 sources): Major arts sections including The Guardian Culture, Le Monde Culture, and Corriere della Sera Cultura, plus dedicated outlets like AlloCiné in France.
-
Science (23 sources): From Nature News and Spektrum.de to Futura Sciences in France, Pesquisa FAPESP in Brazil, and Videnskab.dk in Denmark. Every feed verified and returning valid RSS.
-
Entertainment (17 sources): Film and TV industry feeds like Variety and Deadline, music outlets like Billboard and NME, plus regional entertainment coverage from Beyazperde (Turkey) and Natalie Music (Japan).
Coverage Gaps
While 38 countries and 16 languages provide strong diversity, some gaps remain:
- Africa has 18 sources across 4 countries (Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa). The continent’s 54 nations are underrepresented.
- South America has 16 sources across 3 countries (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia). Major markets like Chile and Peru are absent.
- Middle East relies on 15 sources across 4 countries (Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey). Iran, Iraq, and the UAE are not directly covered.
- Southeast Asia has limited coverage beyond Singapore and Thailand.
These gaps are on our roadmap for future expansion.
Conclusion
With 260 sources across 38 countries, NewsDataHub provides one of the most linguistically diverse open-source news aggregation datasets available. The addition of specialist verticals means we now capture not just political and economic news, but the full spectrum of global media coverage — from sports and science to culture and entertainment.
